Food Shopify stores — 2026 performance benchmark
We audited 10 public Food storefronts running on Shopify in May 2026. The cohort has the slowest mobile LCP we have measured this month: a p75 of 23.8 seconds on mobile 4G. Lighthouse average comes in at 37, median 34. Average detected app spend per store is $194 a month. Here is the rest of the data.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Stores in sample | 10 |
| Lighthouse Performance (avg) | 37 |
| Lighthouse Performance (p50) | 34 |
| LCP (p75, mobile 4G) | 23.8 s |
| INP (p75) | 0 ms |
| Avg monthly app spend | $194 |
| Avg detected apps per store | 1.3 |
How to read these numbers
Every audit ran with Lighthouse’s mobile profile — simulated 4G network, mid-range Android CPU throttling. That is harsher than what most US shoppers experience on home wifi. Customers on faster connections will see better scores. We hold the mobile 4G profile as the benchmark because Google ranks search results that way, even when most of your buyers convert from desktop.
p75 is the metric to watch, not the average. p75 captures the slowest quarter of stores in the cohort — the bulky product galleries, the third-party tracker tax, the bad-day variance. Optimizing for p50 lets the worst case rot quietly. A p75 LCP of 23.8 seconds means a full quarter of Food stores in this sample take longer than 23.8 seconds to render their hero on mobile 4G. That is nearly ten times Google’s “good” LCP threshold. Coffee gets cold faster than the page loads.
INP shows as 0 ms because our synthetic audit does not fire user interactions during the trace. Real-user monitoring is the only honest way to measure INP. Install SOptim if you want a real number from your own traffic.
The sample size deserves a note. 10 stores is the minimum cohort we publish on. Food is a long-tail category on public Shopify — most large CPG and grocery brands run headless or on enterprise platforms. The cohort we caught skews specialty: artisan chocolate, coffee subscriptions, hot sauce, specialty pantry. Read these numbers as “what specialty Food founders ship publicly”, not “what all Food on Shopify looks like”.
What this means for your Food store
A 23.8-second LCP is a conversion problem before it is a Lighthouse problem. Food buyers are impulse-driven on mobile. Industry research repeatedly puts the bailout point at a few seconds. If your p75 mobile visit takes 23.8 seconds to paint, you are not losing the buyer at checkout — you are losing them before they ever see the hero. The fastest store in the cohort painted its hero well under 4 seconds. The slowest needed nearly half a minute. Same platform, same theme family, very different result.
Food storefronts overload the hero with autoplay video. Most stores in this sample shipped a full-bleed background video or motion loop above the fold. Video weighs more than imagery by an order of magnitude, and most of those clips were uncompressed MP4 sourced straight from the marketing team. Two cheap fixes: serve the hero as a poster image first and lazy-mount the video on requestIdleCallback, and re-encode the clip to AV1 or HEVC if you must keep it. Worth noting: not one store in the sample preloaded the poster image, which means the hero LCP element is the poster but the browser does not know that.
$194/month app spend with 1.3 detected apps is a leaner stack than Beauty, but the wrong apps for the LCP profile. Food founders most often run a shipping calculator, a “build a box” subscription app, and sometimes a quiz. Shipping calculators in particular fire on every page load to keep cart estimates live, and they tend to ship synchronously. Audit your theme: any third-party script in <head> should be moved to the end of <body> or guarded by an intersection observer.
The data here is uneven because Food on Shopify is uneven. Custom-domain specialty brands run heavy themes; the average specialty Food founder is more design-led than dev-led. Pick the tactic that moves your numbers, not the tactic that sounds best in a Lighthouse audit report. If your hero is a heavy autoplay video, fixing the video before installing another optimization app will move your LCP further than anything else we have written about here.
