Dawn — 2026 Shopify theme performance benchmark

When we audited 26 public Shopify storefronts running Dawn in May 2026, the surprising result was not that they were slow — it was how slow. Dawn is Shopify’s free flagship theme. It ships with zero baggage out of the box, gets first-party optimization love from the Shopify performance team, and is the theme almost every new store starts on. On mobile 4G, the p75 store running Dawn still takes 19.6 seconds to render its largest contentful paint. That is not a Dawn problem. That is what merchants do to Dawn.

Metricp50p75
Lighthouse Performance3441
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)19.6 s
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)0 ms
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)0.066

Dawn unmodified out of the theme store benchmarks well above what you see here. The gap between Shopify’s reference performance and the field reality comes from what gets layered on top: third-party apps, hero images shipped as uncompressed JPEGs instead of WebP, App Store widgets injected into <head>, custom Liquid that loads jQuery for one date picker. Every Dawn install starts at roughly the same place. The 26 we audited had drifted in different directions.

The CLS p75 of 0.066 is the bright spot. Dawn’s layout discipline holds even under merchant abuse — that figure is comfortably under Google’s “good” CLS threshold of 0.1. INP reading 0 ms is the synthetic-audit artifact: Lighthouse doesn’t fire user interactions during the trace, so INP only measures itself once a real visitor clicks something. Real-user monitoring is the only honest INP number you’ll get from a public-storefront benchmark.

Worth noting: the spread between the 50th and 75th Lighthouse percentile is small (34 vs 41). That tells you the cohort is uniformly slow, not bimodal. There isn’t a fast quarter pulling the average up — Dawn stores cluster together, and the cluster is south of where you want to be.

Mobile 4G is the hardest profile. The same stores would score 25 to 50 points higher on desktop, and customers on home wifi will see two to three times faster LCP than the synthetic number. But Google ranks search results on the mobile score, and the slow quarter never recovers the acquisition cost difference.

When to choose Dawn

Pros

  • Free, official, well-supported. Patched whenever Shopify ships a new admin or checkout primitive.
  • Sections Everywhere — drag-and-drop sections work on every template, not just the homepage.
  • Accessibility tested. Color contrast, keyboard navigation, focus traps work out of the box.

Cons

  • Looks generic by default. Needs typography and color customization to feel like a brand.
  • Your performance score is dominated by what apps and images you add, not the theme itself. Picking Dawn does not auto-save you from a slow hero image or a chatty third-party tracker.

If you are shopping themes and Dawn is on your shortlist, the official Theme Store listing has live previews and the Sections Everywhere demo. Free is hard to beat as a starting point — what you do next is what determines whether you end up in the slow quarter of the cohort or the fast one.
